Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's basketball team stays in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division as three players scored in double-figures in the Flyers' 76-64 victory over Indianapolis on Thursday (Feb. 21) at Neil Carey Arena.
Sophomore
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) led all scorers with 18 points and pulled down eight rebounds, while sophomore guard
Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) scored a career-high 16 points. Senior forward
Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) (Marion, Iowa/Marion) added 15 points and seven rebounds for the Flyers.
The Flyers improve to 19-5 on the year and 12-4 in GLVC action while the Greyhounds fall to 17-7 on the season and 10-6 in conference play.
“Our defensive intensity was solid for 40 minutes,” Lewis head women's basketball coach
Lisa Carlsen said. “We knew we had to do that against Indianapolis, who has some really tough players to match up with.
“Our defensive intensity allowed us to stay in the game until we could put something together, especially in the second half.”
After the Flyers grinded to a 30-29 halftime lead, they started the second half on a 13-7 run to take a 43-36 lead at the first media time out at 14:47. Rinehart led Lewis during the run with seven points.
Lewis kept their momentum going as their lead expanded to 13 points on a Rinehart layup at 9:20 mark in the game.
Indianapolis tried to chip at the Flyers' lead, getting it briefly down to eight points after Kristin Turner made two free throws with 58 seconds left in the game. Itschner and sophomore guard
Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) each made two free thows to push the lead back to 12 before the final horn.
Nellen scored six points, with six assists, three rebounds and three steals for the Flyers.
Katy McIntosh led Indianapolis' scorers with 18 points, while Turner added 11 points and Dajana Jovanoci chipped in 10 points.
Lewis heads on the road to take on Saint Joseph's on Saturday (Feb. 23) in Rensselaer, Ind. Tip-off is set for 3 PM.
