Free Throw Shooting Propels Lewis Men's Hoops To 96-77 Win Over Saint Joseph's

Flyers shoot 91.1% (41-for-45) from free throw line in win; Bryant and Jackson lead Lewis with 22 points apiece.

The Lewis University men's basketball turned in an amazing performance from the free throw line, as the Flyers converted 41-for-45 (91.1%) of their charity shots on their way to the 96-77 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Saint Joseph's at Scharf Fieldhouse on Saturday (Feb. 23) afternoon.

The 96 points was a season-high for the Flyers.

Lewis sophomore guard Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) and senior guard David Bryant (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) (Batavia, Ill./Batavia) went a combined 23-for-24 from the free throw line as each finished with a game-high 22 points. Jackson was a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line, while Bryant went 7-for-8 from the charity stripe and added three trifectas.

The Flyers also received 12 points apiece from sophomore guard Jeff Jarosz (Lyons, Ill./Morton) (Lyons, Ill./Morton) and freshman forward Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North). Sophomore forward Julian Lewis (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) had five points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

"We did what we had to do today," Lewis head men's basketball coach Scott Trost said. "(Scharf Fieldhouse) is not an easy place to play, and I'm proud of the way our guys performed today."

With the victory, Lewis improves to 17-8 overall and 11-6 in GLVC action, while the host Pumas fall to 6-18 on the season and 4-13 in conference play.

Saint Joseph senior guard Damon Ellison, Jr. scored a game-high 21 points for the Pumas followed by 15 points apiece from sophomore forward Ryan Rebholz and senior guard Dayvon Sloan. 

While Lewis went to the line 45 times, the Pumas only managed to get to the line 13 times and made nine of their attempts. The Flyers enjoyed a 40-27 advantage on the glass, including 10 offensive rebounds to Saint Joseph's single offensive board.

Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Feb. 28), as they welcome GLVC East regular-season champion UW-Parkside. Tip-off is set for 7:45 PM and the contest will be broadcast on Lakeshore Public Television.
