Lockport, Ill. - The No. 38 Lewis University men's tennis team picked up their second-straight regional win in as many matches, as the Flyers breezed to the 8-1 win over Lake Superior State at Challenge Fitness on Thursday (Feb. 28) night.
"It was once again a solid all-around effort by our men's team tonight," Lewis head men's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said.
With the win, Lewis improves to 2-0 on the season, while the visiting Lakers drop to 3-9.
The Flyers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, as they won all three doubles matches.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis sophomores
Erik Aunapuu (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) and
Armand Levandi (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) claimed the 8-4 win over Grant Link and Pedro Nunes. Nunes was forced to retire due to injury in his match against Aunapuu at No. 1 singles, while Levandi picked up the 6-0, 6-2 win over Link at No. 2 singles.
Lewis' No. 2 tandem of senior
Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and sophomore
John Richert (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) earned the 8-3 win against Kyle Koster and Ryne DuShane. Hardacre would later defeat TJ Myers, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, while Richert was the 7-6 (6), 6-0 victor over Dane Fosgard at No. 5 singles.
At No. 3 doubles, Lewis'
Florian Etienne (Paris, France/Jean de la Fontaine) and
Philip Kuenzi (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) upended Fosgard and Felix DeSharnai, 8-4. Etienne would also win at No. 3 singles with the 6-2, 6-0 victory over Koster.
Lewis returns to action on March 5th, as they head to South Carolina to meet No. 27 Francis Marion. First serve is set for 2:30 PM (ET).
