No. 20 Lewis Women's Basketball Opens NCAA Tournament Against UW-Parkside Friday

The Flyers face the Rangers for a fourth time this season.

Ashland, Ohio - For the fourth time this season, the second-seeded and No. 20 Lewis University women's basketball team (24-5) will take on seventh-seeded UW-Parkside (19-9) in the opening round of Midwest Regional of the 2013 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. Tip-off is set for 2:30 PM ET at Kates Gymnasium on Friday, March 15.

LAST TIME OUT - Lewis was crowned the 2013 GLVC Tournament Champions for the program's fifth conference title with a 76-61 victory over Maryville on Sunday (March 10). Freshman Mariyah Henley led all scorers with 18 points, while sophomore Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) chipped in 14 points. Senior Sam Rinehart (Marion, Iowa/Marion) collected her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds in the win. 

   After the game, Rinehart and Reinhart were named to the GLVC All-Tournament team, with Reinhart garnering the tournament's Most Outstanding Player honors.

LAST TIME WE MET - In the third match-up of the season, Lewis withstood a late UW-Parkside run to defeat the Rangers, 61-59, to advance to the GLVC title game on March 9th. 

CLOSE VS PARKSIDE - The Flyers other victories over the Rangers have come by single digits, averaging a 3.7-point scoring margin in three games.  

FIRST FOR FOUR - While it hasn't been uncommon to face conference opponents three times in a season, this is the first season the Flyers have seen a GLVC team four times. This is also the third time the squads have faced off in two weeks. 

SHORTEST DOWN TIME - In the 1997-98 season, Lewis played Saint Joseph's twice in a four-day span. The Flyers dropped a regular season game to SJC 93-74 on Feb. 21, 1998. Then Lewis lost 64-62 on Feb. 24, 1998 in the first round of the GLVC Tournament.  

ALL TIME SERIES - The Flyers hold a 37-21 lead.

SAME STARTIN' FIVE - The Flyers can boast that their starting five has remained the same throughout the season.

LEWIS RANKED USA TODAY DII POLL - The Flyers moved up to No. 20 in the USA TODAY Sports Division II Basketball Coaches Poll in the March 12th edition.

NATIONAL RANKINGS - Lewis leads the nation in three-point field goal defense, holding teams to 23.3% from beyond the arc, according the NCAA Statistical Rankings released on Monday (March 10). 

TO 20 WINS - This is the first time the Flyers have won 20 games during the Lisa Carlsen era and first time since the 2006-07 season.

TURNIN' IT AROUND - At the end of the regular season, Lewis has had the best turn-around in Division II women's basketball from last season. After only winning eight games last season, the Flyers have won 24 contests.

ALL-TIMER - Senior Labrenthia Murdock (Round Lake, Ill./Round Lake) became the Flyer's 19th member of the 1,000 Point Club, going over the plateau in the double overtime victory at Indianapolis on Jan. 13. She heads into Friday's game with 1,121 total points. Murdock has moved into to a 5th-place tie in school history with 99 career blocks. Chris Toscas (1988-90) is fourth all-time with 107 career blocks. 

NUMBERS VS. THE GLVC - The Flyers top the GLVC in scoring (70.8) and three-point field-goal defense (23.5%) defensive rebounds (29.8 per-game average) and second in blocked shots (4.3 per-game average, 121 total), field-goal percentage defense (35.7%) 

SOPHOMORE TOUCH - Reinhart is the first sophomore since the 2008-09 season to lead the Flyers in scoring (14.8) and rebounds (7.3). In the 2008-09 campaign, Jenny Turpel led the Flyers with 18.5 points and 6.9 rebounds-per-game.

THE COMEBACK - The Flyers' 68-64 win at Saint Joseph's (Feb. 23) was the third time this season Lewis erased a 10-plus point deficit to win the game. Lewis erased deficits in wins over Bellarmine (77-65) on Feb. 14 and Indianapolis (78-75 2OT) on Jan. 31. 

GRAYER FROM BEYOND THE ARC - Junior Alexus Grayer (Washington, Ill./Washington) currently is fourth all-time in program history with a 39.1% three-point field-goal percentage (92-of-235). 

NCAA REGIONAL DATES - Games will take place Friday (Mar. 15), Saturday (Mar. 16) and Monday (Mar 18).

AWARD SEASON - Carlsen was named the 2013 GLVC Chuck Mallander Coach of the Year. Carlsen is the fourth Flyers' coach to win the award and the first since Lynn Platt earned the honor in 2006-07. 

   Reinhart was named to the All-GLVC First Team while Rinehart and Murdock were named to the All-GLVC Second Team. Murdock was also named to the All-Defensive Team. 

CONNECTING THE WINS - Lewis is currently on their longest winning streak and third streak of at least five consecutive wins this season. Lewis previously picked up five wins over December 1st to January 3rd and January 21st to February 2nd.
