No. 20 Lewis Women’s Basketball’s Season Ended By UW-Parkside, 59-49, At NCAA Tournament

Ashland, Ohio –  The No. 20 Lewis University women's basketball team were held to a season-low in point as they fell 59-49 to UW-Parkside in the first-round of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday (March 15) at Ashland University Kates' Gymnasium.
 
The Flyers finish the 2012-13 campaign at 24-6 while the Rangers move to 20-9. Lewis had the upper hand in the season series, winning the first three match-ups. 
  
“Our total body of work this year was amazing,” Lewis head women's basketball Lisa Carlsen said. “A tough loss today doesn't take away from what this group of young ladies were able to accomplish this year. I couldn't be prouder of them.”
 
Lewis sophomore guard Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) scored a career-high 23 points, making a career-high six three pointers and went 5-for-6 from the free throw line. She also pulled down five rebounds, collected a steal and blocked one shot.

It wasn't until the about the five minute mark in the first half that the Rangers were able to pull away from the Flyers. Parkside closed out the half on a 10-2 run to take a 37-28 lead into the locker room. Lewis shot 33.3% (10-from-30) from the field in the half while Parkside went 15-of-31 from the floor for 48.4% shooting.
 
In the second half, the Rangers kept the Flyers from putting their up-tempo offense in action by running out the shot clock each possession. Parkside was able to extend their lead to a game-high 17 on a Kiah Simon layup at 7:12 in the game.
 
Lewis tried to make a late run to cut Parkside's lead to single digits but ran out of time.
 
Parkside out-scored the Lewis in the paint, 32-12, while the Flyers pulled down more rebounds, 44-39.  
 
Simon led three Rangers in double figures with 15 points. Jenna Endisch chipped in 13 points while Tara Knapstein scored 11.
