Lockport, Ill. - The No. 38 Lewis University men's tennis team swept all three doubles matches on their way to the 5-4 regional victory over Grand Valley State at Challenge Fitness on Sunday (March 17) evening.
"We started the match wonderfully in all three doubles matches and played very smart and aggressively," Lewis head men's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "Unfortunately that did not carry over into the singles (matches).
"We need to improve our fitness level and our mental toughness (as a team)."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 3-3 on the campaign, while the visiting Lakers are now 8-5.
Lewis' play was keyed by the performances of both
Armand Levandi (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi) and
Erik Aunapuu (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentese Spordigumnaasiumi), as they garnered two victories for the Flyers. They teamed up for the 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles over Bryan Hodges and Francis Bertrand. Levandi added a 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 come-from-behind win over Bertrand at No. 1 singles, while Aunapuu clinched the match with the 7-6 (7), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (4) marathon victory over Andrew Darrell.
At No. 2 doubles, Lewis senior
Jesse Hardacre (Racine, Wis./St. Catherine's) and sophomore
John Richert (Indianapolis, Ind./Pike) claimed the 8-3 win over Quinn Sylow and Darrell. The Flyers added a win at No. 3 doubles, as sophomore
Florian Etienne (Paris, France/Jean de la Fontaine) and junior
Philip Kuenzi (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) earned the 8-6 victory over Ben Esh-Nauta and Andrew Bole.
Lewis returns to the court on March 26th, as they head to Bourbonnais, Ill., to meet Olivet Nazarene for a 3:30 PM first serve.
