Somers, Wis. – The Lewis University women's volleyball team found their stride in the first day of action at the UW-Parkside Invitational with a 3-1 (25-20, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19) win over Gannon and a sweep of Upper Iowa, 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-19) on Friday (Sept. 13).
The Flyers improve to 3-3 on the season while Gannon moves to 2-1 for the year. Upper Iowa falls to 2-4.
Against Gannon, the Flyers were led by redshirt junior outside hitter
Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) with 19 putaways as redshirt sophomore right side hitter
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) added 17 kills. Junior setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 46 assists, five kills and four digs. Sophomore outside hitter
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) posted a match-high 16 digs as redshirt freshman libero
Nicole Yuede (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell North) and freshman outside hitter
Bailey Sparkman (St. Charles, Mo./Francis Howell) each collected 13 digs.
"Today, the team progressed from selfish individuals to an amazing selfless team," Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. "I was very proud as I watched how this minor adjustment made such a huge difference in our level of play."
Lewis out-hit Gannon the whole match, as the Flyers hit .252 (60 K, 23 E, 147 TA) for the match compared to the Lady Knights' .172 (42 K, 19 E, 134 TA).
Lewis also out-blocked Gannon, 6-2. Sophomore middle hitter
Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) led the Flyers with two solo blocks and three block assists.
Gannon's offense was led by 15 kills and 11 digs from Hannah Kren while Megan Wendel had 32 assists and 14 digs. Taryn Graham collected 15 digs.
Lewis carried their momentum into their second match of the day for a 3-0 sweep of Upper Iowa.
For the Flyers, Davito picked up 17 more kills as Vertin collected 10 more putaways for her fifth straight match with double-figure kills. Barea tallied 29 assists and six kills while senior libero
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) picked up a floor-high 25 digs.
Upper Iowa was led by Chelsea Berry, who tallied nine kills and five digs. Hailey Brown picked up 16 assists and 10 digs while Katie Chatten had 15 helpers. Amanda Weiss had 19 digs for the Peacocks.
Lewis continues play in the UW-Parkside Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 14) with a 2:30 PM match against Wayne State (Mich.) and a 5 PM face-off against No. 2 Minnesota Duluth.
