Rensselaer, Ind. – The Lewis University women's soccer team picked up their fourth-straight victory on Sunday (Sept. 15) when the Flyers shutout Saint Joseph's (Ind.), 2-0.
The Flyers are off to their best start since the 1997 season, when that squad opened their campaign 7-0.
Lewis improves to 4-0 on the year and 2-0 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play while the Pumas fall to 0-3 on the campaign and 0-2 in league play.
"I am happy to get another conference win today," Lewis head women's soccer coach
Chris Koenig said. "I am proud of how the team cleaned up things in the second half as our midfielders controlled the ball well and the defense won more balls in the air."
Sophomore
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) put the Flyers on the board in the 38
th minute, when she converted on a breakaway off a pass from junior
Susan Thomas (Algonquin, Ill./Marian Central Catholic) for her second goal of the season.
Freshman
Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) added to Lewis' lead in the 63
rd minute when her shot hit the crossbar and bounced favorably behind the Saint Joseph's goalkeeper, Amanda Volk. Sophomore
Megan Szubert (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) picked up her first assist of the season as she played the ball for Carmody.
The Puma's Volk faced eight shots on goal in the contest, picking up six saves.
The Flyers freshman goalkeeper
Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) picked up the shutout, collecting one save, as the Lewis defense held the Pumas to only five total shots, with two on goal.
Lewis returns to GLVC action on Friday (Sept. 20) when the Flyers head to Kirksville, Mo., to take on Truman State. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.
