Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's volleyball team made it a team effort in their Great Lakes Valley Conference 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-17) victory over Quincy on Sunday (Sept. 22) at Neil Carey Arena.
"We came in fired up," Lewis head women's volleyball coach
Lorelee Smith said. "The great thing about this team is that they take every match as it is and just want to win.
"No matter who is on the court they are playing hard and smart volleyball right now."
The Flyers move to 6-4 on the season, 2-0 in conference action while Hawks fall to 4-6 on the campaign and 0-2 in league play.
Redshirt sophomore right side hitter
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) led the way for the Flyers, hitting .714 with 11 kills and one error on 14 attempts. Junior setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) had 18 assists in two sets of action while senior setter
Vivian Pritz (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Township) picked up 10 helpers in one set.
In the first set, the Flyers jumped out to a 10-2 lead on the Hawks. Lewis redshirt junior outside hitter
Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) and Davito each picked up three kills in the set, as the Flyers cruised to a 25-18 set victory.
The Flyers kept the pressure on the Hawks in the second set, hitting .480 with 14 kills and two errors on 25 attempts. Davito picked up six kills in the frame while Vertin added three putaways. Lewis picked up the second set, 25-14.
The squads exchanged two ties in the third set before the Flyers took control. Sophomore middle hitter
Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) picked up two of her four kills in the set and a big solo block. Sophomore outside hitter
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) had three kills and an ace as the Flyers took the set 25-17 for the sweep.
Samantha Haegele led Quincy's offense with nine kills and six digs while setter Renee Beranek had 18 assists.
The Flyers head on the road on Saturday (Sept. 28) to take on Maryville in St. Louis, Mo. First serve is set for 2 PM.
