St. Louis, Mo. – The Lewis University women's basketball team stays unbeaten in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, as the Flyers collected a 67-60 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (Jan. 11) at Chuck Smith Court.

The Flyers collect their seventh-straight victory to improve to 10-2 on the year and 4-0 in GLVC action while the Tritons move to 11-2 on the campaign and 4-1 in league play.

"We did a nice job taking care of the ball down the stretch," Lewis head women's basketball coach Lisa Carlsen said. "This was one of the best all-around defensive games we've played all year."

The Flyers were led by redshirt sophomore guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic), who collected 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, with two three-pointers, as well as four rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) chipped in 12 points for her third-straight game scoring in double-figures, as well as pulled down six rebounds and blocked three shots.

Lewis sophomore forward Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) battled through foul trouble to score 11 points and collect 17 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season. Junior forward Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) went 8-for-8 from the free throw line, as she scored 10 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

In the first half, the Flyers shot 46.4 percent from the floor, making 13-of-28 shots, including going 5-for-6 from long range. Sophomore guard Alyssa Dengler (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) tied the contest at 11-all at 14:08 with a three-pointer, as the Flyers then went on a 23-14 run to take a 34-25 lead into the locker room. Johnson had the shooting touch, scoring 13 points with two three-pointers for the Flyers.

In the second half, the Flyers' lead ballooned to 16 points to go up 50-34 at the 9:02 mark as junior guard Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) hit a free throw. UMSL got within five points, at 65-60 with 0:14 left in the contest on a three-pointer by Alexis Lawrence. Reinhart then hit two free throws with 10 seconds left, as the Flyers went 6-of-7 in the last two minutes of action at the charity stripe.

The Flyers out rebounded the Tritons, 46-34, and went 18-of 26 (69.2 %) from the free throw line. Lewis stayed out of foul trouble in the contest to limit UMSL's trips to the charity stripe, holding them to 8-of-14 at the line.

UMSL forced the Flyers to commit 18 turnovers, but the Flyers were able to score 15 points off of the Tritons' 11 miscues. Lewis got a huge lift from the bench and outscored the UMSL reserves, 15-11.

The Tritons' offense was spearheaded by Lawrence's 15 points and four assists, while Devonna Smith collected 15 points and 11 rebounds.
