Romeoville, Ill. – The Lewis University women's basketball team ratcheted up their fast-pace offense and out ran Truman State to win 98-72 on Friday (Jan. 3) in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Neil Carey Arena.
The Flyers improve to 7-2 on the season and 1-0 in GLVC play while the Bulldogs fall to 6-4 and 0-2 in league action.
"We had a lot of people step up and do what they do well tonight," Lewis head women's basketball coach
Lisa Carlsen said. "On the offensive side, we did a really good job being composed with the ball and got good shots."
The Flyer offensive was led by sophomore forward
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North), who picked up her eighth double-double of the season with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow forward
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) poured in 23 points and pulled down eight boards while redshirt sophomore guard
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) posted 17 points and seven assists.
The Flyers worked together to shoot 54.9 percent (39-for-71) from the field while matching a season-high 22 assists. Lewis only committed nine turnovers while forcing Truman State to 15 miscues. Lewis also out-rebounded Truman State, 41-31.
The squads clashed early for the upper hand as they exchanged six tie-ups in the first nine minutes of action. The Flyers were able to overcome foul trouble to go on a 15-2 run over five minutes to close out the first half, 48-31. Johnson led the way during the run with five points while Reinhart put in four of her 12 points of the half for the Flyers.
Lewis carried their momentum into the second half pushing their lead up to 29 points at the 8:05 mark as redshirt senior forward
Lauren Mead (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) sunk two free throws. Mead chipped in nine points and three rebounds off the bench.
The Bulldogs forced the Flyers into foul trouble again after the intermission but were only able to get within 23 points as Ashley Ploudre made two free throws with 1:50 left in the game.
The Flyers scored 20 of their 44 points in the paint in the second half as they cruised to the victory.
The Bulldogs were led by Nicole Gloor's 20 points while Allie Norton chipped in 14 points, four assists and three rebounds.
Lewis is back in action on Sunday (Jan. 5) when the Flyers host No. 25 Quincy at Neil Carey Arena. Tip-off is set for 1 PM.
