No. 20 Lewis Women’s Basketball Outlasts No. 16 Indianapolis In 3OT, 111-105

The Flyers outlasted the Greyhounds in a match-up for the ages.

Indianapolis, Ind. – This time it took three overtimes, but the No. 20 Lewis University women's basketball team came away with an 111-105 victory over No. 16 Indianapolis in triple overtime to move into sole possession of first-place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division on Thursday (Jan. 30) at Nicoson Hall.
 
In last season's match-up at Nicoson Hall on Jan. 31, 2013, also for first-place in the GLVC East, the Flyers defeated the Greyhounds 78-75 in double overtime.

The last time the Flyers reached the century mark was in a 105-82 victory over Saint Xavier on Dec. 16, 2003, as Darcee Schmidt scored 26 points in the victory. 
 
With the victory in their first overtime contest of the season, the Flyers move to 15-3 on the season and 9-1 in GLVC action while the Greyhounds fall to 17-4 and 8-2 in league play.
 
"I couldn't be prouder of this group tonight," Lewis head women's basketball coach Lisa Carlsen said. "They understand what it takes to dig in and do what they need to do to give themselves a chance late in ball games."
 
"We did a great job not allowing Indianapolis to have second chances and forced them to take some tough shots in the second half and in overtime."
 
Lewis redshirt sophomore guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) led the Flyer offense with a career-high 29 points, including seven three-pointers, eight rebounds and six assists. Sophomore forward Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) picked up her 17th double-double of the season with 23 points and a career-high 18 rebounds while junior forward Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) collected a double-double of her own with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Junior guard Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) chipped in 22 points, eight rebounds and six assists as classmate Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) scored 13 points, dished out eight helpers and collected six boards.
 
With chances to wrap up the victory at the end of regulation and each of the first two overtimes, the Flyers were able to outlast the Greyhounds in the third overtime.
 
In the third overtime, the squads exchanged three-pointers to knot the game at 100-all before the Flyers built a seven-point cushion at 107-100. Reinhart scored four points, while Brawner-Henley added a bucket and Johnson hit a free throw during the run.
 
Indianapolis picked up five quick points as Erin Murphy hit a jumper and Dajana Jovanovic sunk a three-pointer in the waning seconds. The Flyers were able to keep them at bay as Johnson and Brawner-Henley each hit two free throws for the victory.
 
The Flyers shot 41.2% (39-for-93) from the field, including hitting 12 three-pointers, and shot 80.8% (21-of-26) from the charity stripe. Lewis out rebounded Indianapolis, 60-47, and dished out 26 assists.
 
Lewis was able to slow down Indianapolis' fast-break points (22-6) in late in the game as the Flyers picked up 27 second-chance points to the Greyhounds 15 points.

With less than four minutes left in regulation, the Flyers went on a 12-2 run to whittle down the Greyhounds 10-point lead, 77-67. Brawner-Henley converted a three-point play, while Nellen hit a trey, before Johnson hit two three-pointers, including one with 32 seconds left to tie the game at 79-all. Itschner stole the ball to give the Flyers the last possession during regulation, but the Flyer shots wouldn't fall. 
 
The Greyhound offense was led by Kelly Walter who came off the bench to score 25 points, including hitting five three-pointers, and pull down six rebounds. Shelby Wall chipped in 17 points, with five three pointers, as Katy McIntosh tallied 16 points and eight assists. Princess German and Murphy both scored 13 points while Kirsten Gliesmann tallied 10.
 
The Flyers stay on the road to take on Saint Joseph's at Scharf Fieldhouse in Rensselaer, Ind., on Saturday (Feb. 1), with tip-off set for 1 PM.
