Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University men's basketball team had five players score in double-figures - for the second-straight contest - as the No. 22 Flyers extended their winning streak to 10 games with the 85-79 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Quincy at Neil Carey Arena on Sunday (Jan. 5) afternoon.
Lewis junior guard
Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) led all players in points (21), rebounds (9) and assists (4) to pace the Flyer attack. Junior guard
Jeff Jarosz (Lyons, Ill./Morton) pitched in 14 tallies, followed by 13 points and three trifectas by junior forward
David Niggins (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central).
Senior guard
Nick Valla (Tinley Park, Ill./Marist) scored 12 points and added two three-pointers, while sophomore center
Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) had 10 points and three blocks.
"Every game in this league is going to be a dogfight and I expected nothing different today," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "The kids were resilient today.
"They made plays down the stretch and found a way to win."
With the win, Lewis improves to 10-0 on the season and 2-0 in GLVC action, while the visiting Hawks are now 5-8 on the campaign and 0-2 in conference play.
Quincy freshman post player Evan McGaughey led the Hawks with 17 points and added five rebounds. Sophomore guard Nate Des Jardins scored 16 points, including three treys, while freshman forward Scottie Bruxvoort posted 10 points and a team-best eight rebounds.
One game following their worst free throw shooting performance of the year, the Flyers responded with their best. Lewis knocked down 93.5% (29-for-31) of their attempts, including a perfect 17-for-17 in the second half.
In a game that featured eight ties and 19 lead changes in the first half, the Flyers held a 44-43 lead over the Hawks at the intermission.
The first 11 minutes of the second half, however, was all Lewis, as the Flyers built a 69-56 lead with 8:55 left in the contest. Valla and juniors
Gabe Williams (Chicago, Ill./Farragut) and
Julian Lewis (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) were the catalysts for the run, as they each scored five points during that stretch. Williams finished with seven points, while Lewis had eight points and six boards.
Quincy, however, responded with a 23-12 run to narrow Lewis' advantage to 81-79 with 42 seconds left following a Bruxvoort lay-up. McGaughey led the charge with nine points during the run.
That would be the closest Quincy would get, as Jackson knocked down four free throws over the final 15 seconds to seal the victory.
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 9), as the Flyers head to St. Louis to meet Maryville for a 7:30 PM tip-off.
