Lewis Women's Basketball Travels For Thursday Contest At Maryville

Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University women's basketball team (8-2, 2-0 GLVC) takes their five-game winning-streak on the road when they head to St. Louis, Mo., to take on Maryville (8-4, 1-1 GLVC) on Thursday (Jan. 9) in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM at Moloney Arena.

SERIES RECORD – Lewis holds a 4-1 all-time series record over Maryville. 

LAST TIME WE FACED OFF - The Flyers defeated the Saints 76-61 at the Ford Center in Evansville, Ind., to capture the 2013 Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship. Forward Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) led Lewis with 18 points and nine rebounds. Forward Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) turned in 14 points and six rebounds and was named Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. 

LAST TIME ON THE COURT – Junior guard Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Flyers to a 92-80 victory over No. 25 Quincy on Sunday (Jan. 5) at Neil Carey Arena. Reinhart chipped in 21 points while redshirt sophomore guard Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) posted a career-high 20 points.

THREE FLYERS WITH 20-POINTS IN A GAME - Itschner, Reinhart and Johnson's 20-point performances against Quincy on Jan. 5th marked the first time since the 2005-06 season that the Flyers have had three players score at least 20 points. Darcee Schmidt (23 pts.), Mary Moskal (24 pts.) and Schante Glenn (20 pts.) all hit the mark in the Flyers' 95-85 victory at Ferris State on Dec. 21, 2005.

BACK-TO-BACK 90+ SCORING GAMES - The Flyers last poured in 90+ points in consecutive contests in the 2006-07 season. Lewis won 91-77 at Missouri S&T on Jan. 20, 2007, before returning to Neil Carey Arena to defeat Southern Indiana, 92-72, on Jan. 25, 2007.

SOPHOMORE SHINING BRIGHT – Brawner-Henley is the first Flyer to average a double-double since Julie Fruendt completed the 1983-84 season averaging 18.9 points and 10.1 rebounds. 

AMONG THE COUNTRY - Lewis tops the GLVC in blocked shots, averaging 5.3 blocks-per-game, which puts them ninth nationally. The Flyers also lead and are 10th nationally in assists, dishing out 18.9 assists-per-game, while holding a 1.31 assist-to-turnover ratio.

FLYING TO THE TOP – Brawner-Henley leads the country with nine double-doubles in 10 contests this season, while ranking second in rebounds, averaging 13.0 rebounds-per-game.

Brawner-Henley also tops the GLVC in points (20.4 ppg), while ranking second in blocked shots (2.1 bpg) and third in field goal average (.565). 

SHARING THE ROCK – All three of the Flyers starting guards are in the top-10 in the GLVC in assists. Junior Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) tops in the conference in assists and is 20th nationally, dishing out 5.2 assists-per-game. 

Johnson is fourth with 4.8 helpers-per-game while Itschner sits in sixth, averaging 4.2 assists-per-game.

DOUBLE-TROUBLE – Brawner-Henley (31 pts, 17 rebs.) and Reinhart's (30 pts., 13 rebs.) double-doubles on Dec. 7th marked the first time since the 2010 season that the Flyers had two players post double-doubles in the same game. Jenny Turpel posted 24 points and 10 rebounds while teammate Lory Shaw scored 16 points and had 12 rebounds in the 75-70 loss to Saginaw Valley on Nov. 12, 2010.

GLVC WEEKLY HONORS - Brawner-Henley has twice been named GLVC Women's Basketball Player of the Week by the conference this season. She most recently picked up the honors on Dec. 9th after she averaged 25.5 points, 16.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals and 1.5 blocked shots in victories against St. Francis (Ill.) and Purdue Calumet. She picked up her first award on Nov. 11 to start the season.
