St. Louis, Mo. – The Lewis University women's basketball team was tested on Thursday (Jan. 9) by Maryville University in Great Lakes Valley Conference play and came away with a thrilling 76-73 victory at Moloney Arena.
Lewis redshirt sophomore guard
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) hit a jumper from the elbow with 11 seconds left to give the Flyers a 75-73 lead.
After sophomore forward
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) drew the charge on the defensive end of the court, junior guard
Kristin Itschner (Metamora, Ill./Peoria Notre Dame) was fouled and hit a free throw with two seconds left to seal Lewis' victory over the Saints.
The Flyers pick up their sixth-straight win to improve to 9-2 on the year and 3-0 in GLVC action while the Saints fall to 8-5 on the campaign and 1-2 in league play.
The Lewis offense was led by Johnson's 20 points, including two three-pointers, three assists and three rebounds as Itschner turned in 11 points and four assists. Junior forward
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) chipped in 18 points and four rebounds. Brawner-Henley battled for her tenth double-double of the season, collecting 14 points and 11 rebounds as well as two blocks, two steals and two assists for the Flyers.

Lisa Carlsen said. "We made just enough plays down the stretch to get it done."
In the second half, the Flyers worked to their largest lead of the contest to five points at 42-37 when Itschner fed Reinhart for a bucket down low at 17:08. Maryville kept clawing at Lewis' lead, knotting up the contest five more times, the last at 73-73 when Rita Flynn made a layup with 43 seconds left.
Maryville's Shelby Miller then picked Johnson's pocket but the Saints were unable to convert on the turnover as JoAnn Thompson missed from long range. Miller's 25 points and eight assists led the Saints' offense while Erica Lorton and Flynn both chipped in 10 points in the contest.
Maryville won the battle on the boards, 48-40, and picked up a 28-6 bench-scoring advantage over the Flyers. Lewis was able to force the Saints into committing 16 turnovers and picked up 12 points off of their miscues.
Lewis will stay on the road to take on the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday (Jan. 11), with tip off at Chuck Smith Court set for 1 PM.
