St. Louis, Mo. - Lewis University head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles must have delivered one heck of a halftime speech.
Lewis, led by two goals from senior forward
George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College), scored three unanswered second-half tallies to earn the 3-2 come-from-behind Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Maryville at Maryville Field on Sunday (Oct. 12) afternoon.
"It was a good comeback win," Fiffles said. "I thought we showed a lot of heart and determination in the second half to get the three goals and hold on for the win."
With the win, Lewis improves to 7-3-2 overall and 6-2-2 in GLVC action, while the host Saints fall to 3-6-4 on the campaign and 2-6-2 in conference play.
Trailing 2-0 at halftime, Lewis junior
Krystian Nowak (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo) scored his second goal in his last three games, to bring the Flyers to within one at 2-1 at the 47:18 mark. Nowak took a crossing pass from sophomore midfielder
Nicholas Monteiro (Brasillia, Brazil/School of the Nations) and found the back of the net with a blast to the upper right corner of the frame.
Thomson, who had been held scoreless for his last six matches, was turned loose in the second half. Thomson posted the equalizer in the 57th minute with a penalty kick conversion and scored the go-ahead goal less than two minutes later at the 58:28 mark. Lewis junior midfielder
Lenin Roa-Tapia (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) assisted on the play. The Kilmarnock, Scotland native now has a team-best eight goals on the season.
"It's a good sign to see George get a couple of goals, but we still need to work on a more consistent 90 minutes," Fiffles said.
Maryville scored both of their goals in the first half, as junior Zach Klipsch converted a penalty kick at the 10:45 mark to give the Saints a 1-0 advantage. Maryville tacked on another score in the 32nd minute, as sophomore midfielder Ryan Butchart converted a give-and-go from teammate Kory Clawson.
Lewis senior goalkeeper
Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) made three saves in net, while his counterpart CJ Hendricks stopped four Flyer shots.
As a team, Lewis outshot Maryville, 9-8, including a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Lewis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 17), as the Flyers welcome Quincy to Lewis Stadium for 'Black Out' night. First kick is slated for 5 PM.
