ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Jessica Chavez (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) scored Lewis women's soccer's only goal in a 2-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference loss at Maryville on Sunday (Oct. 12) afternoon.

Maryville didn't waste time getting on the scoreboard. Less than four minutes into the game, Danielel Schmitz tapped the ball into the left side of the goal. Her tally was assisted by Jen Jung.

At 33:50 Maryville made it a 2-0 game. The Saints picked up three corner kicks in a minute span and capitalized on the third. Shannon Foley found the back of the net on a goal assisted by Katy Rood and Jung.

Chavez' goal for the Flyers came at 59:36. She deflected a failed Maryville clearance attempt into the goal. Chavez now has five goals on the season and 22 in her Lewis career. It made it a 2-1 contest but the Flyers would never get the equalizer.

"Maryville scored both of their goals on set pieces and we gave up too many set pieces today," Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. "We battled hard in the second half to make it a game again. But when you give up manufactured goals and have to chase the game, you have to be extremely sharp in the final third and we weren't."

Lewis out-shot Maryville 10-8. Chavez recorded seven of Lewis' shots.

Maryville improves to 4-5-3 (3-5-2 GLVC). Lewis falls to 2-6-4 (2-5-3 GLVC). The Flyers return home on Friday (Oct. 17)  when Quincy comes to the 'Ville for a 7:30 p.m. start at Lewis Stadium. It is a Black Out match. First 25 fans will receive a free black t-shirt.
