Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) recorded a career-high six aces in Lewis women's volleyball's 3-1 (20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-20) loss to No. 11 Grand Valley State on Friday (Oct. 17) in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover at the Great Lakes Center. The tournament features each member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference and the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
Davito's six aces are the most for a Flyer in a match since Lauren Seliga recorded seven against Hillsdale on Oct. 15, 2010. The Hillsdale match in 2010 was also part of the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover. Davito's previous career best was five aces against UIS last season on Oct. 5.
Davito recorded five of her aces in the first set. She had three in a row to put Lewis up 6-4 and then two in a row to give the Flyers a 17-15 advantage. The Flyers would take the first set by five points, but it would be the only set Lewis would win in the contest.
The two teams hit nearly even, with Lewis recording a .226 average and GVSU notching a .228 total. The difference came defensively. The Lakers held a 78-65 edge in digs and used those extra chances to earn a 61-45 advantage in kills.
"As a team, we played well enough at times to pull an upset against a very strong, nationally ranked team," Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said. "We let key points slip away here and there and didn't step up and Grand Valley did."
The Lakers' Betsy Ronda had a match-high 18 kills while adding 13 digs. Davito and freshman
Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) each totaled 11 kills for the Flyers. Senior
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) had 21 digs for Lewis.
Grand Valley State improves to 14-2. Lewis falls to 14-4. The Flyers continue action in the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover on Saturday with a pair of matches. First up is Michigan Tech at 10 a.m. and then Northern Michigan at 4 p.m.
