Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University men's soccer team continually applied pressure to Saint Joseph's, before the Pumas succumbed to two Flyer tallies over the final 45 minutes to earn the 3-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory at Lewis Stadium on Friday (Oct. 24) night.
Lewis outshot Saint Joseph's 30-7, including a 13-2 advantage in shots on goal.
"I thought in the second half we came out, strung some passes together and created some opportunities," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said.
With the win, Lewis improves to 9-4-2 overall and 8-3-2 in conference action, while the visiting Pumas fall to 1-13-1 on the campaign and 1-11-1 in GLVC play.
Lewis took a 1-0 lead at the 22:44 mark, as junior midfielder
Krystian Nowak (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo) converted a beautiful header pass from junior midfielder
Luke Comerouski (Itasca, Ill./Christian Liberty Academy). Lewis junior midfielder
Lenin Roa-Tapia (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) also assisted on the play.
The Flyers put the game out of reach in the second half, as both junior forward,
Robert Zieba (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) and sophomore midfielder
Ivan Surlina (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) each tacked on a goal. Zieba scored in the 53rd minute, while Surlina converted an indirect kick from sophomore forward
Johnathan Silvar (Romeoville, Ill./Romeoville) in front of the Puma net at the 83:11 mark. Sophomore midfielder
Nicholas Monteiro (Brasillia, Brazil/School of the Nations) assisted on Zieba's score.
Lewis senior goalkeeper
Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) made two saves in goal to earn his sixth shutout of the season. Saint Joseph's netminder Lewis Jones stopped 10 Flyer shots in the loss.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 26), as the Flyers head east to take on Indianapolis for a 2:30 PM ET first kick.
