LIBERTY, Mo. – Lewis women's volleyball picked up their 13th sweep of the season on Saturday (Oct. 25) with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 defeat of William Jewell. The win gives Lewis their 10th Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season. The Flyers now have nine consecutive seasons of 10 or more GLVC wins.

Saturday's match saw 19 ties and 12 lead changes. William Jewell led the opening set 22-20 before the Flyers scored the final five points of the frame. Senior Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) had two kills and a block assist in the push.

The Flyers trailed the second set 17-12 but used an 8-1 run to take a 20-18 advantage. Lewis never relinquished the lead and won the set by two points.

The Cardinals were nearing a third set win when they tied the final frame at 23. The Flyers went to freshman Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) and senior Katie Fuerst (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) for kills to get the final two points of the match.

"William Jewell never gives up and it shows how much they love volleyball," Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. "It became tough at times to score points but we found a way. Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) made it equally as hard for them to get kills."

Senior Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) had 25 digs, more than a third of Lewis' 74 digs in the match. Vertin led the Lewis offense with 11 kills while adding 14 digs. She also had three blocks (one solo).

William Jewell drops to 3-19 (1-11 GLVC) with the loss. The Flyers improve to 18-4 (10-2). Lewis plays at Rockhurst on Sunday.
