Somers, Wis. - The Lewis University men's soccer team clinched the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship Tournament, as the Flyers and UW-Parkside battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Wood Road Field on Wednesday (Oct. 29) afternoon.
The Flyers will take on a yet to be determined opponent at 2:30 PM on Sunday, November 2nd at Lewis Stadium.
"UW-Parkside wanted it more than us," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "They were more determined, more intense, had more conviction and showed more heart and desire than we did today."
With the tie, Lewis moves to 10-4-3 overall and 9-3-3 in conference action, while the host Rangers are now 9-7-2 on the campaign and 6-7-2 in GLVC play.
Lewis sophomore midfielder
Ivan Surlina (Lombard, Ill./Glenbard East) put the Flyers on the board first in the opening half, as he beat UWP goalkeeper Marcos Perez at the 31:58 mark for his second goal of the season. Lewis junior midfielder
Lenin Roa-Tapia (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) assisted on the play.
That Flyer lead held up before UW-Parkside's Mathew Yang found the back of the net with less than eight minutes left in the contest for the equalizer. Yang gathered in an Antonio Gonzalez rebound and connected for the score.
Perez made five saves for UW-Parkside, while Lewis senior goalkeeper
Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) stopped six Ranger shots.
