Romeoville, Ill. - The Lewis University men's basketball team, led by freshman guard
Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg), led from start to finish as the Flyers earned the 91-62 regional victory over Malone in the final game of the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge at Neil Carey Arena on Saturday (Nov. 15) afternoon.
Strus collected a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Flyer attack, both of which were game-highs. Lewis senior point guard
Jeff Jarosz (Lyons, Ill./Morton) had 14 points, five assists and five rebounds, while senior guards
Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) and
Gabe Williams (Chicago, Ill./Farragut) each posted 13 points for the Flyers. 11 different Flyers scored on the afternoon.
"We're making some progress," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "We got off to a good start, had a little lull in the first half, but I thought we played very well over the last 25 to 27 minutes of the game.
"We're still finding things out about ourselves, but we're certainly happy to get two in-region wins this weekend."
With the victory, Lewis improves to 2-0 overall on the season, while the visiting Pioneers fall to 0-2 on the campaign.
Lewis shot 54.2% (32-for-59) from the field and shot 47.6% (10-for-21) from three-point range. Six different Flyers hit three-pointers, led by three from Strus. The Flyers also enjoyed a sizeable advantage on the glass, as they outrebounded Malone, 46-28.
The Flyers were solid defensively, as Malone shot just 32.8% (20-for-61) for the contest and just 29.0% (9-for-31) in the final 20 minutes.
Malone freshman guard Nate Sheppard converted three trifectas to lead the Pioneers with 13 points, while classmate Ben Haraway posted 12 in the loss.
Lewis is back in action on Thursday (Nov. 20), as the Flyers head to Michigan to square off with Saginaw Valley State for a 7 PM ET tipoff.
