Romeoville, Ill. – After a slow start, the No. 16 Lewis University women's basketball team regrouped to pick up a 72-37 victory over Rockhurst on Wednesday (Feb. 6) in Great Lakes Valley Conference action at Neil Carey Arena.
In the Flyers (17-3, 11-1 GLVC) fifth-straight victory, they held the Hawks (6-14, 1-11 GLVC) to their fewest points allowed by an opponent since a 39-37 victory over Rockhurst in Kansas City, Mo., on December 1, 2007.
The Flyers went on a 13-4 run over seven minutes to take 17-15 lead at the 8:08 mark, to erase a seven-point deficit at 11-4. Sophomore
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) picked up six points during the run while freshman
Alyssa Dengler (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) collected five points, including a three-pointer, as senior
Lauren Mead (Wauconda, Ill./Wauconda) hit two free throws.
Lewis closed the first half with a 28-19 advantage, shooting 33.3% (10-of-33) from the floor while holding the Hawks to 27.6% (8-of-29) from the floor and only allowed them one visit to the free throw line. Lewis also out-rebounded the Hawks 27-17 in the half.
Brawner-Henley led the Flyer offense with 18 points and 10 rebounds for her 18
th double-double of the season while junior forward
Jess Reinhart (Normal, Ill./Bloomington Central Catholic) collected her fifth double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Redshirt sophomore guard
Jamie Johnson (South Holland, Ill./Marian Catholic) scored 12 points, collected five rebounds and dished out five assists. Junior guard
Nikki Nellen (New Berlin, Wis./Pius XI) tallied nine points, seven assists and four rebounds for the Flyers.
"We didn't come out of the locker room with as much intensity as we needed to," Lewis head women's basketball coach
Lisa Carlsen said. "Hopefully, I got my point across and we can learn from this game."
"We did a much better job in the second half controlling the pace, battling on the glass and getting some defensive stops."
The Flyers carried their momentum into the second half, expanding their lead to 35 points, the highest margin of victory since defeating St. Francis (Ill.), 90-50, on Dec. 1, 2013. Lewis made 16-of-31 shots (51.6%) from the floor while cleaning up on the boards in the second half collecting 30 rebounds to the Hawks 16.
The Rockhurst offense was led by Becky Squiers' six points and three rebounds, while Lauren Meyers, Mary Dineen and Taylor Skala each chipped in five points.
The Flyers Saturday (Feb. 8) match-up against William Jewell will be the annual "Play4Kay" pink game. Tip-off is set for 1 PM at Neil Carey Arena. Fans can purchase pink t-shirts for $12 with all proceeds going to the Play4Kay Foundation.
