Louisville, Ky. - For the fourth time in their last five matches, the No. 47 Lewis University women's tennis team blanked their opponent, as the Flyers extended their winning streak to seven with the 9-0 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over Bellarmine at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex on Saturday (Apr. 5) afternoon.
"It was a great response to a short night and a quick turnaround from yesterday," Lewis head women's tennis coach
Brett Bridel said. "They treated the match like business as usual with no excuses."
With the win, Lewis improves to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in GLVC action, while the host Knights are now 8-5 on the campaign and 2-2 in conference play.
At No. 1 doubles, Lewis' senior duo of
Zsofia Lanstiak (Budapest, Hungary/Karinthy Frigyes Gimnazium) and
Zsofia Kranczicki (Eger, Hungary/Szilagyi Erzsebet Gimnazium es Kollegium) bested Michelle McFerran and Evann Waschuk, 8-1. Lanstiak blanked McFerran, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1 singles, while Kranczicki handed Waschuk a 6-2, 6-2 defeat at No. 2 singles.
Lewis' No. 2 tandem of freshman
Ana Banic (Skradin, Croatia/Gimnazija Antuna Vrancica) and sophomore
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) earned the 8-1 win over Caitlin Hanley and Sydney Thompson. Banic upended Hanley, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 singles, while Nguyen claimed the 6-3, 6-4 win over Thompson at No. 4 singles.
The Flyers' No. 3 doubles team of sophomore
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) and senior
Kendra Mills (Elmhurst, Ill./York) earned the 8-6 victory over Jamie Claeys and Sydney Landers. Wetmore beat Claeys, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 5 singles, while Mills downed Abby Dorton, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Lewis returns to action on Friday (Apr. 11), as the Flyers welcome Indianapolis to the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex for a 2 PM first serve.
