Romeoville, Ill. -
Lewis University senior forward George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) launched a rocket past Drury goalkeeper Logan Ponche in the 66th minute to help propel the Flyers to 1-0 victory over the visiting Panthers in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener at Lewis Stadium on Friday (Sept. 12) night.

With the win, Lewis improves to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action, while the Panthers drop to 2-1 on the campaign and 0-1 in GLVC play. The win avenges Lewis' 1-0 overtime loss to Drury in last season's GLVC Tournament.

While Thomson provided the heroics, it was the Flyer defense that stole the show as they held Drury to three shots on goal. That performance helped senior goalkeeper Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) notch his first career shutout. Ponche had two saves, while his replacement Blake Andrews stopped three Flyer shots in the second half.

"I thought our back four did a great job (tonight), because they helped keep us in the ballgame," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said.

Lewis held a 14-12 advantage in shots, including a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.

Lewis is back in action on Sunday (Sept. 14), as the Flyers welcome Missouri S&T to Lewis Stadium for a 12 PM kickoff.
