Winona State HTML Box ScoreQUINCY, Ill. – Lewis opened Great Lakes Valley Conference women's volleyball play on Saturday (Sept. 13) with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-18) victory at Quincy. It was the first of two wins of the day for Lewis. The Flyers turned in a 3-2 victory over Winona State later in the evening.

The Flyers led the first set with Quincy by just two points at 16-14 before pulling away from the Hawks with an 8-2 run. Senior
Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) had back-to-back kills in the push. Vertin teamed with freshman
Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) for a block on set point for the Flyers. The second set was tied 9-9 but the Flyers sided out on all 10 opportunities the rest of the way to keep Quincy from stringing points together. Junior
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) had an ace and a kill in a 4-0 run early in the third set that ended the Hawks' hopes.

The Flyers out-hit the Hawks .272 to .135 and held a 56-40 edge in digs. Senior
Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) finished with 20 digs. Vertin led the Flyers' offense with 10 kills. Parsons recorded nine kills.
Quincy falls to 1-5 (0-1 GLVC) with the loss.

Lewis 3, Winona State 2Junior
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) totaled a career-high 29 kills to lift Lewis to a 3-2 (25-22, 27-29, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11) non-conference victory over Winona State.

Davito hit .375 (29-5-64). While the Warriors out-dug Lewis 108-95, it was Choi who had a match-high 31 digs.
The Flyers trailed 21-20 in the first set, however, they won the set thanks to a late push. Davito scored point 25 with a kill. In set two, Winona State was the first to set point with a 24-22 lead. A Parsons kill and back-to-back Winona State attack errors gave Lewis set point at 25-24. It was the first of three set points for the Flyers, but Winona State would turn all three away. The Warriors eventually won the set 29-27.

The first two sets had a combined 28 ties and 10 lead changes. There were zero lead changes over the final three sets. The Flyers cruised in set three and Winona State did the same in the fourth. The Flyers held a multi-point lead for the majority of the fifth frame. It was Vertin on a kill on match point.

Senior
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) totaled 55 assists and 15 digs. Junior
Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) was the only other Flyer with double-digit kills (11).

"Winning the first conference match and then following it up with a grueling five-game match against a relentless defensive team really pushed us was great," Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said. "I couldn't be more proud of how they stepped up and showed control. Amy has made it tough for opponents to get kills while Alexis has proven she can terminate against teams that have her scouted."
The loss is Winona State's first of the year. They are now 5-1. The Flyers are also now 5-1 (1-0 GLVC) after the pair of wins on the day.

The Flyers travel to Truman State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. first serve against the Bulldogs. Truman State defeated Lewis in the GLVC Tournament Semifinals last season.
