Lewis' .429 attack percentage on Saturday was the highest in a match for a Lewis squad since Nov. 4, 2011 when Lewis defeated Saint Joseph's in three sets.
Leading the pack offensively was junior
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial). She hit .571 with a double-double of 13 kills and 12 digs. Senior
Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) hit .391 with 10 kills. Junior
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) added eight kills and two aces while sophomore
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) contributed three aces.
Senior setter
Leigh Barea (Battle Creek, Mich./Harper Creek) ran the efficient Lewis offense. She recorded 36 assists for an average of exactly 12 per set.
"We worked hard in the last couple months and the preseason to make sure (Barea) had options," Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said. "I think she's very thankful for it and it makes being a setter a lot more fun knowing you can flick the ball wherever ever you want and she's having a lot of success because of it."
The closest set was the first as it featured seven ties and three lead changes. The Flyers trailed 12-11 before a 4-0 push put Lewis up for good in the frame. Lewis recorded back-to-back points three more times in the game to put the set away. The Flyers sided out at 72 percent in the first set, 73 percent in the second and 60 percent in the third.
UMSL falls to 5-3 (2-1 GLVC). Lewis improves to 6-2 (2-1 GLVC). The Flyers host Maryville on Sunday at 1 p.m.
