ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis women's soccer opened the 2014 season with a weather shortened 1-1 draw at home on Friday (Sept. 5) evening against Charleston (W.Va.) at Lewis Stadium.

The contest was originally scheduled to start at 5 p.m. but lightning in the area pushed the start to 6:50 p.m. The contest was played delay free until just over a minute remained in the first overtime. Lightning was again recorded in the area and the game was halted for good.

Lewis controlled the vast majority of the contest thanks to a 19-6 edge in shots. The Flyers peppered Golden Eagles' goalkeeper Zoe Zyta who finished with eight saves. The Golden Eagles earned the first goal of the game at the 36:27 mark of the first half. Holly Bigg scored from 15 yards out on a tally that Brittany Akers earned an assist on.

It stayed 1-0 until the Flyers picked up the equalizer at the 72:01 mark. Junior Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) jumped on a rebound from a shot by sophomore Leah Manning (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) that hit off the crossbar. Grady earned the goal and Manning picked up the assist on the tally. It was Grady's 10th career goal and Manning's second career assist.

The Flyers had a pair of chances minutes later but couldn't capitalize. Junior Daniella DiGioia (Roselle, Ill./Lake Park)'s shot at 77:23 was saved and junior Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows)'s attempt at 79:39 was knocked off the goal line by a Charleston defender.

Neither team recorded a shot in the abbreviated overtime.

Charleston and Lewis both open the season 0-0-1. The Flyers travel to Findlay on Sunday for a non-conference tilt with the Oilers. Start time is set for noon ET in Ohio.
