LAKELAND, Fla. - Senior Amy Choi (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills) recorded 17 digs to help the Lewis University women's volleyball team to a season-opening 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-8) victory over New Haven. Five Flyers earned five or more kills. Senior Kim Vertin (Joliet, Ill./Joliet Central) led Lewis with 10. Senior Katie Fuerst (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) totaled five kills off the bench. The contest was the Flyers' first at the Florida Southern Invite.

"For our first match we showed control and the ability to adjust," Lewis head coach Lorelee Smith said. "Strategic serving and good communication helped our defense."

Lewis took a 4-3 lead in the first set and never trailed in the match again. Choi had an ace for point four. The Flyers opened set two with a 6-0 run and set three on a 19-5 push. Fuerst delivered the kill for match point.

The Flyers limited New Haven to a .000 hitting percentage. The eight points Lewis allowed in the third set is Lewis' best defensive effort since limiting Colorado Christian to eight points on Sept. 2, 2011. The Flyers won that match in three sets as well.

Lewis improves to 1-0. New Haven falls to 0-2.

The Flyers play host Florida Southern at 6 p.m. CT.
