Xenia, Ohio - Lewis University senior midfielder
George Thomson (Kilmarnock, Scotland/Reid Kerr College) posted a hat trick in the first half to propel the No. 15 Flyer men's soccer team to the 3-1 non-conference regional victory over Alderson Broaddus at the Athletes in Action Sports Complex on Saturday (Sept. 6) afternoon.
The hat trick is the first by a Flyer since
Cristhian Ramirez (Wheeling, Ill./Wheeling) notched three in an 8-0 win over Maryville on September 23, 2011. The victory is also the 500th all-time win in school history for Lewis.
"I thought George did a good job on finishing his chances today," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "As a team, I thought we played better in the first half than we did on Thursday (against Saginaw Valley), but we still relaxed too much in the second half (today).
"We need to put together a 90-minute game."
With the win, Lewis improves to 1-1, while the Battlers remain winless at 0-2.
The Flyers got on the board early, as Thomson one-timed a crossing pass from junior forward
Robert Zieba (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) at the 4:52 mark to give Lewis the 1-0 advantage. Less than five minutes later Thomson took a feed from sophomore
Nicholas Monteiro (Brasillia, Brazil/School of the Nations) and snuck it inside the far post to extend Lewis' lead to 2-0.
Thomson added his final goal of the match in the 24th minute, as he beat Battlers keeper Ricard Lao. Lewis junior midfielder
Lenin Roa-Tapia (Schaumburg, Ill./Hoffman Estates) assisted on the play.
As a team, Lewis outshot Alderson Broaddus, 18-6, including a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Lewis senior goalkeeper
Omar Ramirez (Houston, Texas/Elsik) made two saves in goal to earn his first career victory in a Flyer uniform. Lao made six saves on the afternoon.
Lewis returns to action on Friday (Sept. 12), as the Flyers open Great Lakes Valley Conference play against Drury. Kickoff is set for 5 PM.
