Quincy, Ill. -
The No. 23 Lewis University men's basketball team opened the New Year and the Great Lakes Valley Conference campaign in style, as the Flyers bested Quincy, 79-59, to extend their winning streak to six games at Pepsi Arena on Friday (Jan. 2) night.

With the victory, Lewis improves to 9-1 overall and 1-0 in GLVC action, while the host Hawks drop to 6-6 on the campaign and 0-2 in conference play.

Lewis senior guard Jeff Jarosz (Lyons, Ill./Morton) posted a game-high 16 points and four assists, while backcourt mate Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) chipped in 14, including a 10-for-14 performance from the free throw line. Freshman guard Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) notched a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while senior forward David Niggins (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) picked up 10 points.

Jarosz, Strus and Niggins all hit two three-pointers on the evening, while sophomore guard Capel Henshaw (Harrisburg, Ill./Harrisburg) converted all three of his treys in the second half to finish with nine points. This is the fifth time in 10 games that Lewis has hit at least nine three-pointers.

Lewis enjoyed a sizeable advantage on the boards as they outrebounded Quincy, 47-35. The 47 caroms are a season-high for the Flyers and the most by a Lewis squad since they grabbed 50 against Judson on December 19, 2012. As a team, Lewis recorded a season-high 10 steals, led by four swipes from Jackson.

The host Hawks hung tough in the opening half, as Lewis maintained a 40-34 lead at the intermission. The Flyers, however, switched up their defense in the second half which helped them to easy transition buckets that keyed a game-changing 23-6 run to start the final stanza.

"I thought going to a zone defense in the second half was good for us," Lewis head men's basketball coach Scott Trost said. "Jarosz helped control the tempo and I thought Henshaw had a big second half. As a team, we did a good job of controlling the boards tonight."

Quincy's Scottie Bruxvoort and Godson Eneogwe each scored 12 points for the Hawks in the loss.

Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Jan. 4), as the Flyers head to Kirksville, Mo., to square off with Truman State for a 3 PM tip-off.
