Evansville, Ind. - University of Southern Indiana reserve sophomore guard Bobo Drummond scored 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half to help the host Screaming Eagles rally from an 11-point deficit in the final stanza and claim the 64-60 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over the Lewis University men's basketball team at USI's Physical Activities Center on Saturday (Jan. 24) afternoon.
Drummond went 5-for-10 from three-point range, including three trifectas in the second half, to lead the Screaming Eagles, while fellow guard Gavin Schumann picked up 12 points in the victory.
"We just didn't execute very well and USI made some shots," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "It seems like when we face a little adversity, we panic and don't execute, but I thought (Southern Indiana) played a good second half."
With the win, Southern Indiana improves to 12-5 overall and 5-4 in GLVC action, while the visiting Flyers fall to 12-6 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Lewis freshman guard
Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) topped the Flyers with 13 points, six rebounds and four assists. Senior guard
Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) added 12 points, six assists and five rebounds, while senior guard
Gabe Williams (Chicago, Ill./Farragut) added 11 points off of the bench. Both Jackson and Williams converted three treys for the Flyers.
The Flyers held their biggest lead of the game at the 17:26 mark of the second half, as a Strus lay-up put Lewis ahead, 39-26.
The Screaming Eagles responded with a 28-15 run, led by 13 points and three treys from Drummond, over the next 14 minutes to take their first lead of the game at 56-54 with 3:53 left in the contest. That lead would not be relinquished, as USI held on for the victory, as Lewis was held to six points from that point on.
Lewis did not get to the free throw line often on Saturday, but they did not make the most of their opportunities when they did. The Flyers went 1-for-8 (12.5%) from the charity stripe with all seven misses coming in the second half.
Lewis returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 29), as they welcome Saint Joseph's to Neil Carey Arena for a 7:30 PM tip-off.
