HTML BoxROLLA, Mo. – Lewis wasted little time on Friday (Oct. 16) evening taking control of their Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Missouri S&T thanks to a pair of goals in the first 20 minutes. Lewis would hold on for a 3-1 win over the Lady Miners.
"We went into the game trying to get a quick start and it was good for us to accomplish that," Lewis head coach
Chris Koenig said. "It was a little disappointing we couldn't put the game away in the first half but credit S&T as they worked really hard to put us under pressure in the second half."
Lewis out-shot Missouri S&T 15-11 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Senior
Julie Gunnerson (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South) got the Flyers on the board in the seventh minute. She headed in a deflected shot for a goal. It was her first score of the year. Sophomore
Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) earned an assist on the play.
Junior
Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) scored at 19:26. She jumped on a loose ball near the front of the net for her fourth goal of the season.
Missouri S&T made it a game thanks to a tally by Andrea Aller three minutes into the second half. Lewis finally put the game away in the 88
th minute when sophomore
Elena Cukurs (Arlington Heights, Ill./Mount Prospect) redirected a cross from senior
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) into the goal. It was Cukurs' third goal of the season.
"I don't think we lost our way after S&T got that goal and that's a positive with this group that they just keep plugging away," Koenig said. "Anytime you can get a 3-1 win on the road in the conference, I will take that and move onto the next match."
Missouri S&T falls to 1-11-1 (0-10-1 GLVC). Lewis improves to 8-4-2 (6-3-2 GLVC). The Flyers travel to Drury on Sunday. The Panthers are directly behind Lewis in the GLVC standings as Lewis holds the fifth spot following Friday's win.
