Lewis fell behind 15-9 in set four as the Oilers tried to close out the match. Lewis matched Findlay's 7-0 run with five straight points to make it a game again at 15-14. Lewis' push was part of a 16-3 run to close the set and force a fifth.
The Flyers grabbed a 9-5 advantage in the fifth before Findlay turned the tables and eventually tied the set at 10. The squads traded points to 12. Then Lewis went up 13-12 on a Findlay service error. Junior
Carolyn Nojiri (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) entered to serve. Her float serve threw off the Findlay offense as sophomore
Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) pounded down a kill for point 14. An Oiler attack error on the next point gave the match to Lewis. The final set featured eight ties.
"Findlay is a really good team and some of their strengths match up with our weaknesses," Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said. "They are not an easy team to defend and it could have gone either way."
Freshman Elzabeth Hyland hit .361 with 18 kills while adding nine digs and two block assists. Seliga had 11 kills and 17 digs. Senior
Cassidy Parsons (Elkhart, Ind./Elkhart Memorial) hit .647 with 11 kills and no errors. Lewis' two-headed setter combination of freshmen
Abby Becker (Menomonee Falls, Wis./Monomonee Falls) and
McKenna Pierson (Ankeny, Iowa/Ankeny Centennial) helped Lewis out-hit the Oilers .325 to .173. Becker totaled 27 assists while Pierson had 23.
Sophomore
Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) finished with eight blocks as Lewis out-blocked Findlay 13-3.
"In the fourth and fifth set we had some servers who went back, focused and did a better job of putting pressure on passers than what they did earlier in the match," Smith said. "It made a big difference."
The Flyers are now 5-0 in five set matches this season. Findlay falls to 15-5. Lewis improves to 21-1. They return to the court on Friday (Oct. 23) at UIS as Lewis closes the regular season with nine conference matches.
