PDF BoxSPRINGFIELD, Ill. – For a fourth straight match, Lewis women's volleyball earned a victory in five sets. On Friday (Oct. 23) it was a 3-2 (25-11, 25-19, 20-25, 14-25, 15-8) win for No. 18 Lewis over Illinois Springfield in a Great Lakes Valley Conference road contest.
Lewis' streak of three consecutive five-set wins was already a program record. Friday's win just adds to it.
The Flyers out-blocked the Prairie Stars 13-3. Senior
Morgan Cebula (Stevens Point, Wis./Stevens Point Area) led Lewis with six blocks. She also added six kills.
Lewis cruised to victories in the first two sets before UIS evened the score at four sets each.
"Springfield made some adjustments and played super hard in the third set," Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said. "After that win they never let up. It is nice to see our team fight, but I think everyone would be happier if we learned how to keep the momentum longer than two sets."
The fifth set was all Lewis. The Flyers scored two consecutive points on five occasions to grab an 11-6 lead. A pair of UIS points made it a three-point game, but it was as close as UIS would get. Senior
Alexis Davito (Crest Hill, Ill./Lockport) had a kill for point 12. Cebula followed with a kill for point 13. Cebula then had block assists on points 14 and 15.
Davito led the match with 14 kills. Sophomore
Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) dished up 20 digs.
UIS falls to 5-18 (2-8 GLVC). Lewis improves to 22-1 (10-0 GLVC). The Flyers put their 21-match win streak on the line against McKendree on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a key GLVC East Division contest.
