ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – Lewis women's soccer dropped a Great Lakes Valley Conference women's soccer match 3-2 to Rockhurst on a rainy Friday (Oct. 23) night at Lewis Stadium.

The Flyers found themselves playing from behind for the majority of the contest after Rockhurst scored in the fifth minute on a goal by Nicole Keeve. The goal was assisted by Jessica Cook.

"Obviously, it was a very poor start," Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. "We weren't nearly as organized defensively as we needed to be to start the game."

Lewis found the equalizer at 28:07. Senior Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) took a nice pass from sophomore Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and raced the final 20 yards toward the goal, beating the keeper to the right. Junior Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) and Fuller earned assists on the play.

The Hawks took a 2-1 lead to the break when Brandi Van Booven scored in the 41st minute. Rockhurst went up 3-1 on a tally by Mackenzie Moore when she jumped on a loose ball in the box in the 64th minute. It was assisted by Kinsley Fitzpatrick.

Lewis fought back, however, when senior Greccia Miranda (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central) scored on a pass by freshman Kianna Clark (Lake in the Hills, Ill./Crystal Lake South) in the 73rd minute. Miranda blasted it in from 10 yards out.

It appeared for a moment that Lewis had knotted the game at three not a minute later when a deep ball bounced over the head of Rockhurst goalkeeper Caitlin Winschel. She chased the ball toward the goal before her, two Lewis players and the ball slid past the goal line. The refs nullified the apparent goal, calling a foul on Lewis just inches in front of the goal as the players chased the ball down.

It was one of Lewis' best chances to tie the game. Lewis also had a header hit the crossbar in the final five minutes.

Lewis falls to 8-6-2 (6-5-2 GLVC). Rockhurst improves to 7-4-5 (7-4-2 GLVC). Lewis hosts William Jewell on Sunday. The Flyers will celebrate Senior Day festivities before the contest.
