ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – It was Senior Day for the Lewis women's soccer team on Sunday (Oct. 25) against William Jewell. However it was Lewis' underclassmen doing the damage in the Flyers' 2-0 win over the Cardinals in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

Seniors Megan Szubert (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), Julie Gunnerson (Darien, Ill./Hinsdale South), Brianne Pettas (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg), Greccia Miranda (New Lenox, Ill./Lincoln Way Central), Leah Manning (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg), Lauren Grady (Algonquin, Ill./Jacobs) and Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) were honored in a pregame ceremony.

"This group has done a lot to change the culture and raise the standard," Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. "We still have one more game and that is one of the things the seniors talked about."

Lewis struck quickly, scoring in the eighth minute. A nice pass from junior Meg Carmody (Orland Park, Ill./Sandburg) found sophomore Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) in space eight yards out. Fuller wasted no time finishing the play for her fifth goal of the season.

The Flyers made it 2-0 in the 51st minute on freshman Lena Trentl (Pforzheim, Germany/Johanna Wittum Schule)'s first career goal. She took a pass from Carmody and scored into the top right corner of the goal.
Lewis out-shot the Cardinals 22-11, including a 12-5 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) made five saves to record a shutout for the Flyers.

"The performance was fantastic," Koenig said. "We had people step in and do a solid job with what we asked them to do. It was great to get that first goal and I thought we did a solid job defensively."

Lewis improves to 9-6-2 (7-5-2 GLVC). William Jewell falls to 6-8-3 (4-8-2 GLVC). Lewis returns to the field on Wednesday in the final regular season game of the season. Lewis hosts UW-Parkside at 5 p.m. at Lewis Stadium.
