Romeoville, Ill. - Despite season-highs in shots and goals scored, the Lewis University men's soccer team dropped a 3-2 Great Lakes Valley Conference decision to William Jewell College at Lewis Stadium on Sunday (Oct. 25) afternoon.
"I thought offensively we created some shots and opportunities (today)," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "That, however, goes hand in hand (with our defense) because you have to keep the ball out of the back of the net."
With the victory, William Jewell improves to 4-10-3 on the campaign and 3-9-2 in conference action, while the host Flyers fall to 1-14-1 overall and 1-12-1 in GLVC play.
William Jewell struck quickly as they posted two goals in 46 seconds in the first half. WJC sophomore midfielder Hunter Short struck first at the 16:34 mark, while junior midfielder Ethan Delaney converted a point blank shot from the 10-yard line to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage at the 17:20 mark.
The Flyers cut that lead in half, as sophomore forward
Juan Elizalde (Chicago Heights, Ill./Bloom) chipped in a shot over the head of WJC goalkeeper Joe Keeven in the 23rd minute.
Delaney added an insurance score in the 57th minute, as he beat Lewis netminder
Aaron Menyes (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) to extend the Cardinals' advantage to 3-1.
That goal proved important, as Lewis answered two minutes later with a score. A WJC defender attempted to clear a free kick in front of the net, but the ball deflected off the knee of Lewis freshman forward
Christian Goushas (Lemont, Ill./Lemont) for the score, bringing Lewis to within one at 3-2 in the 59th minute.
Keeven made five saves for the Cardinals to earn the win, while Menyes stopped three WJC shots.
Lewis outshot William Jewell, 17-10, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Lewis plays its final game of the season on Wednesday (Oct. 28), as the Flyers welcome UW-Parkside to Lewis Stadium for a 7:30 PM kickoff.
