VALPARAISO, Ind. – Lewis women's swimming won all 11 events on Saturday (Oct. 3) in a 146-45 season opening victory at NCAA Division I Valparaiso.
"This was an earlier than usual start to our regular season so I had some concerns about our readiness," Lewis head coach
Roger Karns said. "In addition, we had some of our best swimmers out with illness or injury. However, the team responded better than can be hoped for with both the men and women winning every event. We had some very promising swims and it was a great way to start the year."
Senior
Montana Clasby (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Cedar Falls) picked up wins in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.05) and the 200 IM (2:13.91). She also swam the second leg of a 200 medley relay (1:51.97) victory for the Flyers.
Freshman
Gabby Jeffers (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) made her Lewis debut by winning a pair of races. She was first in the 50 freestyle (25.19) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.95).
Freshman
Taylor Vera (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central) touched first in the 500 (5:25.16) and 1000 freestyle (11:06.88) events.
Sophomore
Shannon Sullivan (Elmhurst, Ill./York Community) used a time of 2:00.04 to win the 200 freestyle. Sophomore
Sarah Simar (Jennings,La./Notre Dame) swam the 100 butterfly in 1:02.35 for a first place swim.
Senior
Shelby Leonard (Sarasota, Fla./Sarasota) stopped the clock in 53.72 for a first place performance in the 100 freestyle. She also opened Lewis' victorious effort in the 400 freestyle relay (3:41.51).
"We are battling some illness and injury on the women's side but they stepped up in a big way today with some exciting early season swims," Karns said. "The coaches were very pleased."
Saturday's meet was Lewis' earliest start ever to a season. The Flyers are back in the the pool on Oct. 23 in a home meet with Great Lakes Valley Conference foe William Jewell at 5 p.m.
