EAST PEORIA, Ill. - No. 23 Lewis women's volleyball picked up a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-22) win over Drury in the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Quarterfinals on Friday (Nov. 20) evening at the East Side Centre. Drury was the No. 3 seed in the West Division. Lewis entered as the No. 2 seed in the East Division.
It was a freshman and a sophomore leading the Lewis offense on Friday. Freshman
Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield Central) hit .600 with 14 kills and only two errors. She also added 11 digs to record a double-double in her first career postseason contest. Sophomore
Maddie Seliga (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) hit .308 with 10 kills while adding three blocks (one solo).
They helped Lewis out-hit Drury .321 to .056. The Flyers out-blocked the Panthers 8-4 with sophomore
Aly Schneider (Granger, Ind./Penn) recording five block assists.
"We did a great job before the play with communication," Lewis head coach
Lorelee Smith said. "Drury can be super tricky. We also slimited our errors tonight, which was key."
Lewis used early scoring runs to grab quick leads in each of sets. The tightest set was the third as Drury rallied to take a 21-20 lead. It was short lived as two key Drury attack errors down the stretch helped Lewis finish the match.
Drury ends their season 21-11. Lewis improves to 28-4. The Flyers will play in the GLVC Semifinals on Saturday at 5:30 against the winner of Rockhurst and UW-Parkside.
