PDF BoxRENSSELAER, Ind. – No. 7 Lewis women's basketball limited Saint Joseph's to only 14 field goals on Thursday (Dec. 3) evening in the Flyers' 68-55 win over the Pumas at Scharf Fieldhouse. It was the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both schools.
The Pumas spent only 3:33 of game time with the lead. Their final lead of the game came at 15-12 with 2:16 left in the first quarter. The Flyers took control of the game with a 19-3 run over the end of the first and early parts of the second quarter. Six different Flyers had a basket in the push as Lewis limited SJC to 0-of-6 shooting in the stretch.
The visiting Flyers out-rebounded the Pumas 51-28. Lewis shot 26-of-56 (46.4 percent) while limiting their opponents to 25.0 (14-of-56) percent shooting. Saint Joseph's stayed in the game thanks to a 22-of-28 to 10-of-13 advantage at the charity stripe.
Senior
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) led all scorers with 20 points while grabbing 13 rebounds (five offensive). She enters Saturday's game needing only four rebounds to reach 1,000 in her career. She would be only the second Flyer in program history to reach that amount.
Junior
Alyssa Siwek (Palos Heights, Ill./Mother McAuley) added 14 points with six assists. Freshman
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) pitched in 12 points and seven boards. Senior
Alyssa Dengler (Chicago, Ill./Trinity) used three 3-pointers to score 11 points.
"Mariyah was phenomenal down the stretch on both ends," Lewis head coach
Kristen Gillespie said. "Alyssa (Dengler) hit huge shots for us when we needed them most."
Freshman
Tierney Lockett (Richton Park, Ill./Rich South) had six points, five rebounds and three assists.
"Tierney played with a tremendous amount of poise for a freshman," Gillespie said.
Lewis improves to 7-1 (1-0 GLVC). Saint Joseph's falls to 5-3 (0-1 GLVC). Lewis returns to the court on Sunday (Dec. 5) at Indianapolis in a 1 p.m. ET start against the Greyhounds.
