PDF BoxROMEOVILLE, Ill. – No. 7 Lewis women's basketball defeated Cumberland 81-60 in a non-conference contest at Neil Carey Arena on Wednesday (Dec. 30). In the game, senior
Mariyah Brawner-Henley (Skokie, Ill./Niles North) became Lewis' all-time rebounding leader.
Brawner-Henley entered the game needing 10 rebounds to pass Julie Fruendt's (1981-1985) 1,043. Brawner-Henley grabbed her 10
th rebound in the third quarter to break the mark. She went on to grab 12 in the game, to bring her career total to 1,046.
"I'm extremely proud of Mariyah," Lewis head coach
Kristen Gillespie said. "She is a once-in-a-lifetime type player. It takes a special player to have a great desire to rebound the ball on a consistent basis for four years. She has made herself into the All-American that she is today."
Brawner-Henley was a big reason the Flyers earned the 21-point victory on Wednesday. She recorded 28 points, three steals and two blocks in addition to her 12 rebounds. Her two blocks gave her 115 for her career, moving her to third all-time in Lewis history. Teammate freshman
Jessica Kelliher (Waukesha, Wis./Waukesha North) recorded career highs with 29 points and 12 rebounds. The duo scored 57 of Lewis' 81 points. Kelliher finished 12-of-19 from the floor.
Junior
Alyssa Siwek (Palos Heights, Ill./Mother McAuley) totaled nine assists in the game.
The Flyers attempted four 3-point shots in the game, and made all four.
Lewis pulled away in the third quarter thanks to a 22-5 run.
Wednesday's contest was Lewis' final non-conference game of the season. The win gives Lewis a perfect record at home in non-conference games for a third straight year.
The Flyers improve to 11-1. The contest was an exhibition for NAIA member Cumberland. Lewis returns to the court on Saturday (Jan. 2) in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at UW-Parkside. Tip in Kenosha, Wisconsin is set for 1 p.m.
