Liberty, Mo. - The Lewis University men's basketball team rallied from a six-point deficit to William Jewell with less than 20 seconds remaining and capped it off with a
Ryan Jackson (Bolingbrook, Ill./Riverside-Brookfield) buzzer-beating jumper to give the visiting Flyers the 74-73 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over the Cardinals at the Mabee Center on Thursday (Feb. 5) night.
Jackson finished with 11 points and a game-high five assists. Lewis senior forward
Julian Lewis (Flossmoor, Ill./Homewood-Flossmoor) collected a season-high 15 points and seven rebounds, while freshman guard
Max Strus (Hickory Hills, Ill./Stagg) pitched in 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting, including two three-pointers. Senior point guard
Jeff Jarosz (Lyons, Ill./Morton) had 13 points and tied a career-high with eight rebounds in the victory.
With the win, Lewis improves to 15-6 overall and 7-5 in GLVC action, while the host Cardinals fall to 9-11 on the season and 5-7 in conference play.
WJC senior guard Jordan Lewis led all scorers with 24 points as he knocked down all six of the Cardinal three-pointers on the evening. Sophomore forward D'Vante Mosby collected a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds, followed by 14 points from senior guard Christian Hildebrandt.
Prior to Jackson's game-winner, the Flyers only lead of the game was at 2-0 following a lay-up by
Kyle Nelson (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles North) with 19:17 left in the first half. It was all WJC after that, as the Cardinals built a 15-point lead at 56-41 with 6:53 remaining in the contest.
The Flyers kept chipping and chipping away and it all seemed for naught as Mosby hit a pair of free throws with 29 seconds left to give WJC the 70-63 lead.
On the next possession, Jarosz converted a traditional three-point play as he was fouled on his lay-up to bring the Flyers' to within four at 70-66 with 23 seconds left.
Forced to foul, Lewis sent Lewis to the free throw line with 21 seconds remaining, as he hit both of his charity shots to push the Cardinals ahead 72-66.
Lewis sophomore
Capel Henshaw (Harrisburg, Ill./Harrisburg) cut that lead in half, as he drained his second three-pointer of the night with 12 seconds on the clock to cut WJC's lead to 72-69.
Again, Lewis sent WJC freshman guard Patrick Whelan to the line for a pair of free throws. Whelan split both of his charity shots to extend the Cardinals' advantage to 73-69 with nine seconds left.
Jarosz gave the Flyers a glimmer of hope as he drained a pocket trifecta with two seconds left to slice WJC's lead to 73-72. He then provided the defensive play of the night, as he drew an offensive foul on Hildebrandt to give the ball back to the Flyers.
Jackson took the inbounds pass from Jarosz, drove from the right wing and pulled up at the free throw line for the game-winning jumper.
Of the 24 points that Jarosz and Jackson combined to score, 16 of those points came in the final six minutes of the contest.
"I'm proud of the way our guys never quit," Lewis head men's basketball coach
Scott Trost said. "We found a way to win (tonight) without playing our best (basketball)."
As a team, Lewis shot 40.6% (26-for-64) from the field and 23.1% (6-for-26) from three-point range. William Jewell shot 37.3% (19-for-51) from the field and 27.3% (6-for-22) from three-point range.
Lewis returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 7), as the Flyers head to Kansas City to meet Rockhurst for a 3 PM tip-off.
