By Dan MusilekMaryville, Mo. – The Lewis University women's tennis team defeated Northwest Missouri State, 5-4, on Friday (March 13), handing the Bearcats their first loss of the season at the Frank Grube Tennis Courts.
With the victory, Lewis moves to 3-4 on the season, while the host Bearcats fall to 3-1.Â
Lewis freshman
Nora Mindiyarova (Moscow, Russia/Gimnasium 1577) and sophomore
Ana Banic (Skradin, Croatia/Gimnazija Antuna Vrancica) teamed up for an 8-3 victory over Northwest Missouri State's Camila Quesada and Margaux Jaquet at No. 1 doubles. Banic would also claim a 6-2, 6-4 win over Jaquet at No. 3 singles.
At No. 2 doubles, Lewis' junior duo of
Megan Nguyen (Germantown Hills, Ill./Metamora) and
Jill Wetmore (Ottawa, Ill./Ottawa) defeated Rachel Dibbins and Lorena Rivas Jarolim, 8-4. Nguyen added a 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 marathon victory over Jarolim at No. 2 singles. At No. 4 singles, Wetmore earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Northwest Missouri State's Aniek Kolen.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (March 15), as the Flyers meet Emporia State for a 1:30 p.m. first serve.
