CLERMONT, Fla. – Lewis softball opened Wednesday (March 4) with an eight-inning 5-4 loss to Walsh before bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Cedarville.

Game One – Walsh 5, Lewis 4
The contest was scoreless until Lewis put an unearned run on the board in the third inning. Walsh quickly responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, including a leadoff home run by Anna Anderson.

In the fifth, freshman Jenna Cairo (Chicago, Ill./Fenwick) doubled to score freshman Kaylee Prieto (Chicago, Ill./Marist) for the Flyers. Senior Kelsey Ullrich (Winfield, Ill./Wheaton North) then doubled in a pair of Flyers to make the score 4-2. Lewis' lead didn't last long after Walsh tied it up with a two-spot in the bottom of the fifth.

Lewis' best chance to go ahead came in the seventh when the Flyers put runners at second and third with no outs. However a fly out and back-to-back pop outs ended the threat.

In the eighth, the teams used the international tie-breaker rule by starting each extra inning with a runner on second base. Each team sacrificed their runner to third to start the frame. However a ground out and strikeout ended Lewis' top of the eighth. In the bottom half, Walsh's Jenna Head reached on an error to score Sam Troxell from third to give the Cavaliers the win.

Sophomore Lainie Schweickert (Peru, Ill./St. Bede Academy) started for the Flyers. She allowed four runs (three earned) in 4.0 innings. Senior Kelly Bowler (Lockport, Ill./Lockport) tossed the final 3.1 to pick up the loss. Walsh's Casi Rohr went all eight innings, giving up four runs (three earned) to get the win.

Walsh is now 4-3.

Game Two – Lewis 3, Cedarville 1
Bowler threw all seven innings in game two, giving up one run on three hits with nine strikeouts. Her record is now 6-1.

Ullrich put the Flyers on the board in the first on a two-run home run. In the second, Prieto singled in freshman Cori Reynolds (Lansing, Ill./TF South) to make it 3-0.

Cedarville's only run came in the sixth in a rally that started after Bowler struckout the first two Yellow jackets.

"Kelly did an awesome job in game two and really pitched well," Lewis head coach Becky Pearl said. "Kelsey had a big home run and it was great seeing Cori come through with the big bat."

Reynolds was the only Flyer with two hits in the game.

Courtnie Spain (1-3) threw all seven innings in the circle for the Yellow Jackets and took the loss.

Cedarville falls to 2-7 while Lewis is now 7-4 after Wednesday's contests. The Flyers are back in action on Friday (March 6) in games with Gannon and Wilmington.
