Quincy, Ill. -
The Lewis University men's soccer team jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over No. 9 Quincy, following a Nicholas Monteiro (Brasillia, Brazil/School of the Nations) score, but the Hawks bounced back with three unanswered goals on their way to the 3-1 Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the visiting Flyers at Legends Stadium on Sunday (Sept. 20) afternoon.

With the win, Quincy improves to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in conference action, while the visiting Flyers drop to 0-5-1 on the campaign and 0-3-1 in GLVC play.

Monteiro struck first in the 19th minute, as he took a pass from freshman midfielder Edgar Garcia (Berwyn, Ill./Morton West) and beat Quincy goalkeeper Nate Griffin to the left post, giving Lewis a 1-0 advantage.

Ten minutes later, the Flyers would be forced to play a man down as senior Krystian Nowak (Bridgeview, Ill./Argo) drew his second yellow card of the afternoon to earn a red card.

The Hawks would even the score up at 1-apiece in the 41st minute, as Conner Sendobry headed in a corner kick from Xhovani Dokaj. Quincy would take the lead for good at the 47:07 mark, as Artan Emini beat Lewis netminder Aaron Menyes (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) to push the Hawks ahead, 2-1.

Quincy added an insurance goal in the 70th minute, as Emini found Taylor Reis for the final score.

Quincy outshot Lewis, 26-9, including a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal. Menyes made six saves for the Flyers, while Griffin stopped one.

"I thought we came out and played well," Lewis head men's soccer coach Evan Fiffles said. "Obviously the red card hurt us, but we have no excuses.

"We need to do things better."

Lewis returns to action on Friday (Sept. 25), as the Flyer welcome Maryville to Lewis Stadium for Faculty/Staff Night. First kick is slated for 7:30 PM.
