Romeoville, Ill. - Maryville's Luke Gilsinger scored the game-winning goal with 2:47 remaining in overtime to lift the visiting Saints to the 1-0 (OT) Great Lakes Valley Conference victory over the Lewis University men's soccer team at Lewis Stadium on Friday (Sept. 25) night.
Gilsinger took a feed from Erik Schafer and looked to be heading past the end line and out-of-bounds, but was able to beat Lewis goalkeeper
Aaron Menyes (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove North) for the game-winner.
With the win, Maryville improves to 3-4-1 overall and 1-3-1 in conference play, while Lewis is 0-6-1 on the campaign and 0-4-1 in GLVC action.
Maryville outshot Lewis, 11-10, including a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal. Menyes made two saves in goal for the Flyers, while Maryville netminder Christian Kjaersgaard made one stop to earn the shutout.
"We have to create more chances for ourselves (offensively)," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "We have to take care of the ball more and put one away (in the net)."
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 27), as they welcome Missouri-St. Louis to Lewis Stadium for a 2:30 PM first kick.
