PDF BoxQUINCY, Ill. - Lewis women's soccer held a 2-0 lead over No. 3 Quincy on Sunday (Sept. 20) before the undefeated Hawks rallied for a 4-2 victory over the Flyers. The loss is Lewis' first Great Lakes Valley Conference setback of the season.
Lewis controlled the pace of play in the first half, holding a 4-3 edge in shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes. They finally took advantage in the 42nd minute when sophomore
Elena Cukurs (Arlington Heights, Ill./Mount Prospect) scored her first collegiate goal by pouncing on a loose ball in the box.
Lewis quickly made it 2-0 in the second half when at the 51:06 mark senior
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows) capitalized on a Quincy mistake. Lewis sent a long pass from beyond midfield toward the goal. Moran pressured the Quincy defender in the box and the defender tried to pass it back toward the goaltender. Her pass was too strong and bounced toward Moran who deposited the ball in the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
The second goal seemed to energize the Hawks who responded with four goals in the final 25 minutes. The first came at 65:46. Lewis goalkeeper sophomore
Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) made a leaping save but she couldn't control the rebound. Quincy's Ashley Burton took the rebound and put it in the net.
Six minutes later Ashley Burton scored off a corner to tie the match at two. Then at 77:27 Mackenzie Rief scored on a break way to put the Hawks up for good. Abby Pulliam scored for Quincy with five minutes remaining in the game for the fourth goal.
"We played some our best soccer of the season in the first half," Lewis head coach Chris Koenig said. "But in the second half we sat back too much didn't dictate things. In the final 25 minutes Quincy created several corners and they are most dangerous on set pieces. I think we learned we can beat anyone on our schedule. But in the end everyone is extremely disappointed as we had a chance to knock off the number three team in the country."Lewis falls to 4-2-2 (2-1-1 GLVC). Quincy improves to 5-0-2 (2-0-2 GLVC). Lewis returns home on Friday for a 5:00 p.m. start against Maryville.
