Jennifer Meyer (Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport) made a career-high 11 saves as Lewis women's soccer upended Maryville 1-0 on Friday (Sept. 25) night in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Lewis Stadium.
Following a scoreless first half, Lewis found the back of the net in the 50
th minute. Sophomore
Elena Cukurs (Arlington Heights, Ill./Mount Prospect) scored into the upper left corner from the far right post. The goal was assisted by sophomore
Mackenzie Fuller (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and senior
Maggie Moran (Arlington Heights, Ill./Rolling Meadows). Moran had her back to the net as she passed the ball over her head to Cukurs. The goal was Cukurs' second of the season.
The Flyers made the goal stand up thanks to the goaltending of Meyer. She made seven of her 11 saves in the second half.
"It wasn't a good start for us," Lewis head coach
Chris Koenig said. "I thought in the second half we came out with a little bit better of a thought process, especially in the first 10-15 minutes. We were fortunate to get a goal. Elena had a nice finish. Maryville had a lot of shots but many were from distance. Our backs did a nice job of not letting them behind us."
The shutout is Meyer's third of the season.
Lewis improves to 5-2-1 (3-1-1 GLVC). Maryville falls to 3-3-1 (2-2-1 GLVC).
The Flyers host Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday in a GLVC contest at noon.
