Romeoville, Ill. - It was not the way the Lewis University men's soccer team wanted to start the season.
No. 18 Saginaw Valley State, spurred by two goals from junior forward Jordan Kalk and three assists from senior forward Tyler Channell, claimed the 3-0 regional victory over the host Flyers at Lewis Stadium on Friday (Sept. 4) night in both team's season opener.
Channell also assisted on the first goal of the game, as he found junior forward Matt Wilson for the score in the 10th minute.
With the victory, Saginaw Valley State improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Flyers fall to 0-1 on the campaign.
"I think you saw two teams trying to play two different ways," Lewis head men's soccer coach
Evan Fiffles said. "Saginaw Valley State willed their style upon us and we were not able to adapt and do what we wanted to do on the field and you have to give (SVSU) credit for that."
Saginaw Valley State sophomore goalkeeper Alexandre Bouillennec stopped three Flyer shots to earn the shutout victory. Lewis netminder
Justin Salazar (Elburn, Ill./Hinckley Big Rock) made three saves for the Flyers.
Lewis returns to action on Sunday (Sept. 6), as they head to Fayette, Iowa to square off with Upper Iowa for a 12 PM first kick.
